A friend of mine left on a red-eye flight across the country; she’ll be away for months, we’ll physically be apart, but I’m not sure how much will change for me. Our technology connects us and separates us; we can communicate effectively across continents, and just as effectively, we can use our computers to ignore our neighbors and stay in — instead of going out to meet friends.

There's an app for virtually anything, but for programming? What are the choices?

There are a few blogging apps (including the one I'm using now, Squarespace on the iPhone 4) that allow updating, but for coding, the options seem limited. I recently downloaded Gusto for the iPad, created by Horse and the Rook. It's the nicest I've seen so far, but it's far from perfect.

Why hasn't Apple released an iPad version of iWeb?

I'd rather have a mobile Dreamweaver, but hey, WYSIWYG is a start. Freeway by Softpress could become a really great iApp. There's a bunch of sites dedicated to making websites for the iPhone/iPad, but what about making a website on the iPad?

Steve Jobs talked about the iPad being the magical third device — not a desktop replacement, nor notebook. It's certainly better than the netbook, but it could be so much more. The next-gen iPad could have a retina display and cameras built-in, or even 3D... but the quality of the device would still be in the software.

I hope more creators pickup the iPad and iPhone and look at it as a new creative development platform. Sketchbook Pro by Autodesk is a great example of what these mobile devices can be used for. There's no reason these tools couldn't be used by programmers.

Many could benefit from an IOS app that allows the regular person to edit and maintain a website. I think it could also be a goldmine.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://superfloo.us/journal/2010/7/20/computer-hardware.html"><rss:title>Computer Hardware</rss:title><rss:link>http://superfloo.us/journal/2010/7/20/computer-hardware.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Technology apple cintiq iPhone ipad mac tablet</dc:subject>

Despite all this “antennaegate” nonsense, I got myself an iPhone 4, and I’m happy with it. The retina-display is amazing. I also got a Kindle DX last week; the more time I spend with it, the more I love it. At last, I thought to myself, all I need to get is a 3D HDTV and move out of Oakland, and everything will be peachy!

Alas…

Once again I find myself out of storage space on my main computer. My main computer isn’t new, anymore… and I’ve been giving some thought toward getting a new one. I just don’t know what would best suit me at the moment.

Things are changing.

My life was simpler last year; I knew what I was doing, I knew how to do it, and I wasn’t going out much. I’d made dramatic lifestyle changes and had settled into the uncomfortable routines of pain management. This year, I’m trying to be slightly more active, and I’m once again using computers frequently.

Desktop or notebook?

The iPad was the real game-changer. The iPhone did a lot to make some net-based tasks easier, but typing on one just isn’t quick or convenient enough. With the iPad I was able to establish new routines and processes to get stuff done. Apple’s tablet was the first device of its kind to really replace a notebook — it’s so far beyond the netbook that it’s unreasonable to compare the two.

Unfortunately, I can’t do everything on the iPad. Though there are many wonderful apps available on iTunes’ App Store (there are also many dismal ones), many necessary utilities are missing. I still need a Mac for some stuff. But what would suit me best? I’m debating between the iMac and Mac Pro.

Perhaps someday soon, I’ll have both; a work machine, and a media machine. For now, I need to prioritize, and the next two pieces of hardware I need are a printer and a WACOM Cintiq 12WX. Most of my design work starts as a sketch, and my Tablet PC is just too old to be effective. I can’t even find a replacement battery for it. I did add a Motion Computing LE 1600 to my wishlist, however, and at $450, it’d make for a great gift.

With or without, things are happening. I’ve been creating new artwork and I’m going to release some new designs as well as some writing. Somehow, with all of this going on, I’ve managed to set aside time to watch some Star Trek and post journal entries. However, my books and my aircraft design are drifting toward limbo — I need to rectify that.

If you also want to make some things happen, here’s a book I suggest:

Making Ideas Happen by Scott Belsky

Reader beware: the following may challenge your beliefs — prepare to throw out your incorrect assumptions.

Designed very quickly by Bradtastic Brad Chin on the iPad using Sketchbook Pro. Copyright © 2010 — don’t steal art… even bad stuff.

Typography represents language directly; it’s the art of setting type. Modern fonts are so convenient; even restricted to less than one dozen web fonts at the turn of the millenium, the average person could detect distinct differences between Times New Roman and Helvetica/Arial.

Fonts make words come alive.

Great text can sit on a page, dull and boring — distasteful even — and still have great power, meaning and purpose. The difference is, set properly, words on a page become more; attaining and almost ineffable quality, something similar to the magic that happens when a great script is given to an incredible actor.

Finding a font could be considered similar to finding an actor to play a part — the role remains even without a star. A stand-in could work just fine — laymen might not even notice. Art, however, demands more.

Writing as a tradition, a prime element of culture and history, even on a blog.

Reading The Cult of the Amateur changed my stance on blogs and blogging as a pastime for the masses. Publishing, due to its inherent cost, was limited before the computer revolution. Type was carefully set, text was proofread, words were carefully chosen and fonts were limited.

Our time now is one where free font making software can be downloaded by any amateur and a plethora of sub-par, incomplete and broken fonts can be purchased for next-to-nothing. Many fonts are given away — worse, many are stolen.

Piracy of any artistic endeavor diminishes our future. Artists need to make a living just like everyone else; when music is stolen, movies are torrented or fonts are downloaded and traded illegally, many creatives stop creating. The quality of art descends holistically. These damaging actions aren’t usually malicious or intentional, but the consequences remain.

Piracy, specifically of fonts. (too broad a subject in general)

The completion of a proper, complete, well-crafted OpenType font (the best format, in my opinion) is quite an achievement. It takes careful craftsmanship, refinement, testing, modification… and finally it can be published. It might take a typographer one year to create a single font set — the letters and ligatures themselves are art. Using the font without paying for it is akin to stealing an image and using it, or relabeling a piece of music to claim ownership over another’s music, lyrics, and voice. It’s disheartening to see stolen art used for commercial purposes, and it’s absolutely pitiful that so many people are unaware of it.

Most people believe that they have the right to earn a living, especially here in America or in other major nations, but the anonymity of the Internet makes it easy to take from others for personal gain.

For the beauty of it.

I hope that others take a moment to appreciate language and the written word, especially in this age of video and high-fidelity audio. Keyboards are replacing pens, but when are keyboards going to be replaced? Eventually, we’ll speak to our computers to issue commands — beyond that, our thoughts alone will carry out machine functions. I cherish the opportunities I have to enjoy the beauty of a printed page, and I hope devices such as the Kindle encourage others to keep print from becoming a thing of the past. I have handwritten journals that will likely survive intact longer than the hard-drives of my current computers — there’s something wonderful about that. In its essence, typography represents our history as we want to remember it and present it.

American newspapers generally use serif fonts — European publications tend toward sans-serif. This simple difference of type-style represents large cultural differences… so elegantly.

Proper punctuation, spelling and grammar shouldn’t be cast aside. Our keyboard shortcuts, slang and 140-character limit “tweets” are changing English in ways difficult to predict. These trends will spread to other languages, and communication will adjust — it will advance, or dissolve. Language should adapt and change, but personally, I like a language with rules and etiquette.

A simple way to support type.

First, make sure you buy your fonts legally.

Obviously, don’t steal fonts. There are many ways to buy fonts, on-and-offline, but not all sources are legal. Buy from reputable sources. If you find a font discounted more than 40% — beware. If you’re looking for some really great stuff, check out Linotype and Hoefler & Frere-Jones. Also, a favorite of mine, Adobe offers an amazing collection called Font Folio 11. [all Bradtastic Approved!]

Don’t let others use your fonts.

Basically, don’t let other people steal fonts. Most fonts aren’t “purchased” — they’re licensed — meaning the creator or foundry maintains rights over the font, and when you “buy” it, you’re buying the rights to use the font. The license agreement will likely specify what you can and can’t do with the font.

Spread the love.

Share this with others; hopefully there are people out there who like writing and reading, and enjoy nice-looking type. Explain why it’s important to respect the rights and work of the typographers and artists who spend so much effort, energy and money to create these wondrous letters, and tell them what the rules are.

There’s also a great, simple way to share new and amazing fonts online — Typekit. I won’t go into too much detail here — there’s an about page — basically, the type designers are paid, and Typekit code allows splendid, unique fonts to display on most major browsers as highlightable, regular text. The days of using images for fancy fonts are over; they’re even figuring out how to get this tech to work on mobile browsers like the iPad and iPhone. For an example of Typekit in action, check out Bradtastic Defined, my very personal site. I need to re-familiarize myself with coding first, but I’m planning on implementing Typekit fonts on all of my sites.

Please, share your thoughts; comment, ask questions…

and definitely share your favorite fonts with me!

I've heard wonderful things about it; from the retina display to the 5MP camera and video chat, the phone is likely to be a game-changer. Thus far, dual camera devices haven't done much to make mobile video chatting attractive to consumers — seems like the iPhone 4 will change that.

Things from Amazon

Yesterday, I placed an order for Autodesk Sketchbook Pro 2010 and a Sherpa pen. I should receive the software tomorrow. I'd really like a new tablet to take advantage of the awesome drawing tool; I saw the Motion Computing LE1600 for $450 at Amazon, though I've been thinking, a Wacom Cintiq 12WX might make more sense. (if I'm going to sketch at home, I'd rather do it connected to Mac, and if I'm out, I'd use the iPad)

I'm strongly considering getting the new graphite Kindle DX; I'm not upset about waiting now, either, because of the $110 price drop. As much as I love my iPad, reading from a backlit screen just doesn't cut it. Maybe when the iPad gets retina display, the experience will be better. Reading magazines on the iPad is superb, but I'd never spend hours on end reading them — as opposed to books, ad they generally take at least one hour, and I try to read at least two every day.

Other tech

I hope Apple updates the MacBook Air. The new iMacs are really nice; I'd certainly create marvels with the 27". I am out more often now, and with several events coming up in the near future (SC2 Bay Area Launch Party & Tournament, for one), it might be practical to get a 3G iPad.

We'll see. To pay for these things, I'll need to finish up my other designs and projects. Reading up/studying programming and CSS isn't much fun for me, so I've been reading some books on grids and typography as well to break up the bits. I'm putting together new websites (not just for me) and finalizing some print-work — perhaps I'll share some of it, as I think you'll like it.

Tidbit about Draft

Software, idea management, brainstorming

I've enjoyed playing around with mind-mapping and idea-mapping, GTD and other task management solutions (Action Method)... though I'm still trying to be more bit literate. I've found Things for iPhone to be helpful, Taskpaper, and I like Adobe Ideas for iPad. The App Store has a dedicated GTD section filled with great tools such as Momento and Penultimate.

Despite reading negative reviews and the $9.99 pricetag, I decided to try 37signals' first iPad app, called Draft. Its features are limited; with only two color pens, one writing size, an eraser and one-level "undo," the app is hard to comprehend. It can sync to Campfire (a web-based group chat platform with iPhone apps like Ember) but not Backpack (yet). I'm really hoping that it gets better.

I'm going to try Use Your Handwriting Gold ("UYH") today — I see it as being a nice note/task management tool for use during phone calls (for things like writing phone numbers).

I told a friend that I'd post more often

So I will... and I'll try to keep it engaging. I've got another busy week; SF, Infiniti dealership, design, print, meetings — I need to get adequate rest.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://superfloo.us/journal/2010/7/1/marrakech-magic-experience-design.html"><rss:title>Marrakech Magic Experience, Design</rss:title><rss:link>http://superfloo.us/journal/2010/7/1/marrakech-magic-experience-design.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Design Events bradtastic approved bradtastic creations magic show magician sf entertainment</dc:subject>

Looking for something fun to do in the SF bay area? Special entertainment for Father’s Day — a treat for dad.

Peter Morrison — magician, and friend of mine — is opening his new magic theater this week in San Francisco! The already world-famous Marrakech Moroccan restaurant, located in the theater district, one block away from Union Square, now offers a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

What you need to know.

This show is Bradtastic Approved. I’ll be there tomorrow night! But if you can’t make that show, don’t fret or weep (at least not too much) — just visit sanfranciscomagictheater.com and get yourself a ticket. If you let Peter Morrison know that you’re a friend of mine, he may even do something extra-special for you and yours.

Also, be sure to let him know that you LOVE the marketing material, door poster, and all theater-related graphic design. That stuff isn’t just Bradtastic Approved, it’s Bradtastic DESIGNED. If you know me, you know that my stamp of approval doesn’t get placed everywhere or on just anything.

Tickets are $55, and you can purchase at the door. (If you want to order by phone, dial 800-838-3006 and reference “Marrakech Magic Theater” or “Peter Morrison”)
